Bug Recorder adds a button to a merchant's storefront that lets visitors report a bug by recording their screen and microphone (on desktop browsers), or by recording a replay of their on-page activity together with their microphone (on browsers, such as mobile browsers, that cannot capture the screen directly).
When a store visitor uses the Record a Bug button, depending on their browser, we collect and store one of the following:
In both cases we also store the URL of the storefront page the recording was made on, and the shop's domain and the date and time of the recording.
To operate the app itself, we also store the merchant's Shopify session token (used to authenticate the app with the merchant's store) and the merchant's own widget configuration (button color, position, and label).
We do not knowingly collect end-customer personal data such as names, emails, or order information through this app. A recording may incidentally capture whatever is visible on the visitor's own screen or on the page at the time — for example, page text such as a name shown on an account page. Responsibility for reviewing and handling that footage rests with the merchant who receives it.
Recordings and their metadata are made available to the merchant who owns the store, solely so they can review and act on the bug report. We do not sell, rent, or share this data with third parties for marketing purposes.
Recordings are stored on our application server. Recording metadata is stored in MongoDB Atlas. Widget configuration and session data used to operate the app are stored in a database on our application server. All of these are operated by us and are not shared with unrelated third parties.
Data is retained for as long as the app is installed on a merchant's store. When a merchant uninstalls the app, Shopify notifies us via the mandatory shop/redact webhook, and we delete that store's recordings, recording metadata, and widget settings in response. We also respond to Shopify's other mandatory compliance webhooks (customer data requests and customer redaction) as required for all Shopify apps; this app does not store data tied to individual end customers beyond what is described above.
